Winning your issue campaign

April 22
April 29

Changing public policy at the local, state or federal level requires careful planning and strategy. This session covers how to pick, define and clarify your issue, and how to design a campaign plan to win your issue. The session borrows heavily from the Midwest Academy strategy chart, analyzing goals, constituency, allies and opponents, targets, framing your issue, demands, and tactics.

National Convention of Direct-Care Worker Associations Empowering Ourselves: Leading the way to quality care through quality jobs

August 15-17 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Hosted by the Iowa CareGivers Association (ICA), the August conference was “a historic event,” says Leonila Vega, executive director of the Direct Care Alliance (DCA). “Direct-care workers leaders and their supporters from 18 states got together, for the first time in history, to say for themselves how and what they are willing to do gain respect for the profession and fight for benefits and pay and so on.” Nearly 70 direct-care worker leaders and their supporters attended the two-day event.

Video Highlights

Celebrate Direct-Care Workers
From November 30 through December 2, 2005, direct-care workers, consumers, employers, policymakers, and other key long-term care stakeholders will gather at the Buena Vista Palace in Walt Disney World Resort (formerly known as the Wyndham Palace Resort and Spa) in Orlando, Florida, to recognize and demonstrate the value of the direct-care workforce. Jointly hosted by the DCA and the Pioneer Network, Celebrate Direct-Care Workers is the only national conference to be held by either organization this year.

DCA Conference Unites and Inspires Worker Advocates
September 18-20, 2004

In a striking display of the power and promise of the growing movement to improve job quality for direct-care workers, more than 130 long-term care workers, consumers, employers and advocates gathered in Washington, D.C. for the Direct Care Alliance’s national conference September 18-20.

Day of Dialogue: “Building Shared Awareness and Understanding” - Direct-care Alliance and People with Disabilities

In late June 2003, distinguished leaders from the disabilities community came together in Washington, DC for two days, to engage in an unprecedented dialogue with members of the Direct Care Alliance. With much enthusiasm, the groups began to build a shared awareness and understanding, working towards three goals:
Explore an understanding of differing perspectives on direct-care (support) workforce issues;
Begin to develop an understanding of each other’s languages and contexts as a way to better understand how people with disabilities can best work with direct-care (support) workers; and
Explore opportunities to work together to achieve common goals relating to the direct-care (support) workforce.
