Planned Follow-up Meeting Blossoms into National Movement
A meeting initially conceived as a small gathering to follow up on a survey of direct-care worker associations blossomed into a movement of passionate, caring activists whose mission is to reform the work place to ensure quality care through quality jobs. Workers, consumer, employers and policy makers gathered in Iowa on August 15-17 in Des Moines, Iowa. Hosted by the Iowa Caregivers Association, the Empowering Ourselves Conference led to a network of caring activists resolving to work together to advocate for direct care professionals. The group will lead efforts in their states to achieve improved healthcare coverage and wages for direct care professionals. We will do this through education and policy change to ensure quality jobs that provide quality care through advocating for the four Rs on behalf of direct care workers: • Recognition A short documentary of the event was filmed and is currently being edited.
